The section of the Mayan Train that connects Cancun with Playa del Carmen has registered an impressive flow of passengers since its launch.
As of August 8, more than 34,258 users have enjoyed this service, which connects two of the most popular destinations in Quintana Roo.
This section has not only been used by national and international tourists, but also by the local population and special groups who have taken advantage of the discounts offered to teachers, students, people with disabilities and senior citizens.
The Maya Train, one of the flagship projects of the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, continues to expand its impact in the southeastern region of Mexico.
In a morning conference, Oscar David Lozano Águila, general director of Tren Maya S.A. de C.V., reported that of the tickets sold, 3,107 were purchased by girls and boys, while adults bought 31,151.
Of these tickets, 26,402 were purchased at station ticket offices, while 7,856 were purchased through the online platform.

The stretch that connects Cancun and Playa del Carmen offers six daily commercial services to adapt to the high demand of the Riviera Maya.
Schedules are varied, allowing passengers to choose the option that best suits their plans. Available schedules include:
- 7:00 hours Mérida Teya – Playa del Carmen
- 17:30 hours Playa del Carmen – Mérida Teya
- 14:00 hours Cancún – Playa del Carmen
- 10:30 hours Playa del Carmen – Cancún
- 9:00 hours Cancún – Playa del Carmen
- 15:30 hours Playa del Carmen – Cancún
These schedules allow for great flexibility, making it easier for both tourists and locals to move between these key tourist destinations.
Impact of the Mayan Train on the Riviera Maya
Since its inauguration on December 16, 2023, the Maya Train has transported a total of 314,104 people, demonstrating its rapid adoption and success among travelers.
This project is not only designed to improve connectivity between cities in southeastern Mexico, but also focuses on strengthening tourism in the region.
Section 5 of the Maya Train, which covers 111 kilometers of electrified double track, is scheduled to be completed in September.
This section connects some of the most emblematic tourist attractions in the region, including the operational stations of Cancun Airport, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and, soon, Tulum.
Nearby points of interest include the Arrecife Alacranes National Park, the ‘Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marín’ Botanical Garden, the famous Quinta Avenida, the Parque Fundadores and the iconic Maya Portal.
