Mexican President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum announced an ambitious investment Thursday to transform the Mayan Train into a freight railroad.

During a press conference, the future president, who previously served as head of government of Mexico City (2018-2023), explained that the completion of this project could take up to two years and will require an additional investment of 35 billion pesos, equivalent to approximately 1.842 billion dollars.

Sheinbaum explained that the Mexican Army already has the necessary development plans and that the investment will also cover the recent expansion to Puerto Progreso, a promise made during her election campaign.

The construction of the Maya Train, which began in December 2018 under the orders of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, is designed to benefit the communities of the five states of southeastern Mexico: Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo, along more than 1,500 kilometers.

Expansion of the Mayan Train and infrastructure development

In addition to the plans to convert the Maya Train into a freight railroad, Sheinbaum highlighted the importance of the complementary infrastructure that will be necessary to support this transformation.

With the investment of 35,000 million pesos, not only the adaptation of the existing tracks is contemplated but also the development of new facilities that will facilitate the cargo operation, such as warehouses, maneuvering yards and specialized stations.

The expansion to Puerto Progreso, a key port on the Yucatan peninsula, is part of the ‘Maya Renaissance’ project, an initiative promoted by Joaquín ‘Huacho’ Díaz Mena, the newly elected governor of Yucatan.

Sheinbaum reaffirmed her commitment to this expansion, ensuring that it will be a priority in her administration, as she seeks to boost the economic development of the region.

Priorities for the next six-year term

Sheinbaum made it clear that the completion of the Mayan Train as a freight railroad is one of her top priorities for the next six years.

Along with this project, she also emphasized the importance of the Interoceanic Corridor, an initiative that seeks to connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans through the narrowest stretch of Mexican territory.

This corridor is considered a strategic project that will boost trade and logistics internationally.

For the Interoceanic Corridor, Sheinbaum estimated that an additional investment of 48 billion pesos, almost 2.526 billion dollars, will be required and that it will include the construction of two new railway lines, one of which will extend to Guatemala.

The president-elect will take office on October 1, and it is expected that these projects will be promoted from the beginning of her term, marking the beginning of a new stage in the country’s infrastructure and development.
