Javier May leaves the Mayan Train
As part of his strategy in his political career, Javier May leaves the Mayan Train and will return to his state to participate in the next state elections.
One of the most prominent personalities of the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Javier May, has decided to leave his position as director of the National Fund for Tourism Promotion (Fonatur).
This surprise move points to his intention to run for governor in his home state of Tabasco. General Óscar David Lozano Águila will assume his position, reorienting the administration of the Mayan Train towards the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena).
May’s decision was confirmed by López Obrador at a recent press conference, who stressed the autonomy of his colleague to pursue his political ambitions. May’s resignation is in line with Morena Council guidelines, which require that any official aspiring to an electoral role must resign from their current position.
The Tren Maya project, now in the hands of Sedena, has been a key element in promoting development and tourism in the country. With the transition formalized by a presidential decree, López Obrador emphasized that the measure would help safeguard investment and avoid possible privatizations of the project.

It is not the first time that May has tried to leave a government post. In March 2020, she tried to resign due to conflicts with María Luisa Albores, who then headed the Welfare Secretariat. López Obrador did not accept her resignation and, in September of the same year, promoted him as head of the Welfare Secretariat.
Since January 2022, May has been the face of the Mayan Train project, the most representative work of the current government. Despite criticism surrounding his lack of advanced academic credentials, he has had the unconditional support of López Obrador, who went so far as to say in a conference that he would like to have “a hundred like Javier May.”
