The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, recently held a meeting with the president of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo de León, where the possibility of extending the Interoceanic Train and the Mayan Train to Guatemala was discussed.
Planned Connections
During his morning conference in Tapachula, Chiapas, López Obrador mentioned that the Interoceanic Train and the Mayan Train could extend their routes to Guatemala.
This plan seeks to strengthen the connection between Mexico and Central America, facilitating tourism and commerce in the region.

Mayan and Interoceanic Train Would Connect with Central America
Key Sections in Chiapas
Chiapas is a crucial region for these railway projects. Currently, two sections of the Interoceanic Train pass through this state: Line FA, which goes from Coatzacoalcos to Palenque, and Line K, which connects Ciudad Ixtepec with Ciudad Hidalgo.
In addition, the Mayan Train also has important sections that cross Chiapas, making this state a strategic point for railway expansion.
Meeting with the President of Guatemala
In his meeting with President Arévalo de León, López Obrador discussed issues such as security and migration, as well as the implementation of social programs such as Sembrando Vida and Jóvenes Construyendo el Futuro
However, one of the highlights was the possible extension of the trains.
López Obrador expressed enthusiasm for a project that would more closely link Guatemala and southeastern Mexico, facilitating tourism between Flores in Guatemala and Calakmul in Campeche, Mexico.
Both regions are famous for their impressive Mayan ruins, Tikal and Calakmul, respectively.

In addition to Guatemala, the Mexican president also mentioned the possibility of extending the Mayan Train to Belize, which would further expand the project’s international connections and boost tourism and the economy throughout the region.
This expansion plan for the Interoceanic Train and the Mayan Train not only promises to improve connectivity in southeastern Mexico and Central America, but could also be a significant catalyst for economic and tourism development in these countries.
