In the morning press conference of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the importance of collaboration between the communities of Chiapas, Campeche, Yucatán, Quintana Roo and Tabasco in the implementation of the Mayan Train project was highlighted.
The president underlined the fundamental role of the popular will in the authorization and defense of this work, which is a symbol of development and progress in the Mexican southeast.
In addition to the cooperation of the people, the president highlighted the commitment and punctuality with which the construction companies have worked on the different sections of the Maya Train.
Among them, he mentioned Mota-Engil, which was in charge of section 1, which goes from Palenque, Chiapas, to Escárcega, Campeche, and which is close to completing the Tenosique station.
He also recognized Grupo Carso, responsible for section 2, which runs from Escárcega to Calkiní, in Campeche; Azvindi Ferroviario, which built section 3, from Calkiní to Izamal, Yucatán; and to Empresas ICA, in charge of section 4, which connects Izamal with Cancún, Quintana Roo.
An Impressive Tour: The Impact of the Mayan Train
Óscar David Lozano Águila, general director of the Tren Maya, reported that as of August 14, 2024, this means of transportation has traveled a total of 749,379.7 kilometers, which is equivalent to more than 170 trips from Cancun to Tijuana.
Currently, the Tren Maya operates 24 active stations that cover a route of 908 kilometers through five states in southeastern Mexico, from Palenque, Chiapas, to Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo.
Since it began operations on December 15, 2023, the Tren Maya has transported 340,622 passengers.
Of the tickets sold, 248,700 were purchased at ticket offices and 91,922 online. Regarding the demographic distribution of passengers, the majority are adults, with a total of 317,858, while 22,764 are girls and boys.

The Most Demanded Stations and the Work Behind the Project
The stations with the highest demand on the Maya Train route include Cancun, Merida-Teya, Campeche, Playa del Carmen, Valladolid and Palenque, accounting for 80.4 percent of total ticket sales, with a total of 274,122 tickets sold in these locations.
This success reflects the relevance of the Maya Train in promoting tourism and economic development in the region.
The general director of the Maya Train highlighted that 890 professionals are currently involved in the operations of the project, supported by nine teams of inspectors who travel the 908 kilometers of tracks daily to ensure safety before any train enters service.

The report was attended by prominent executives and representatives of the companies involved in the construction of the Maya Train, such as João Pedro Parreira of Mota-Engil Latin America, Manuel Muñozcano Castro of Azvindi Ferroviario, Guadalupe Phillips Margain of Empresas ICA and Antonio Gómez García of Grupo Carso.
Also present were Blas Andrés Núñez Jordán, head of the Maya Train Operations Coordination Center, and Diego Prieto Hernández, general director of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), who stressed the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors and local communities to carry out this monumental work that promises to transform the Mexican southeast.
