During the morning press conference of the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the Ministry of Culture, through the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), presented the progress of the Program for the Improvement of Archaeological Zones (Promeza) in sections 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the Mayan Train.
This program aims to preserve and improve 15 archaeological sites located along the train route, promoting knowledge and conservation of the rich cultural heritage of the Mayan region.
The general director of the INAH, Diego Prieto Hernández, highlighted that so far 19,055 real estate assets have been recovered, as well as 1,383 movable assets of various types, such as ceramics, stone tools and offerings.
He also mentioned the analysis of more than 1 million ceramic fragments that have revealed information about ancient populations, their artisanal production and their trade networks.

Other findings include 529 human burials and 1,295 natural features linked to the presence of ancient Mayan groups.
Advances in Infrastructure in Archaeological Zones
In Section 1, which runs from Palenque, Chiapas, to Escárcega, Campeche, the works in the Palenque Archaeological Zone are 95% complete. In addition, the Visitor Service Center (Catvi) at this site is already completely finished.
In Moral-Reforma, Tabasco, 46% progress has been made in the construction of the Catvi and 12% in the Site Museum, with a scheduled completion date of November 2024.
In the El Tigre Archaeological Zone, in Campeche, the works are in an initial phase and are expected to be completed in December of the same year.
On the other hand, in Section 2, which connects Escárcega with Calkiní, Campeche, the Edzná Archaeological Zone has reached 99% progress in infrastructure.
The Site Museum was inaugurated on June 28, 2024. At the Xcalumkín site, improvement works will be completed in August of this year.

Progress in Yucatan and Quintana Roo
In Section 3, which extends from Calkiní, Campeche, to Izamal, Yucatán, improvements are being carried out in the archaeological sites of Uxmal and Dzibilchaltún.
In Uxmal, the Catvi is 7% complete, while in Dzibilchaltún this infrastructure has already been completed.
In Section 4, from Izamal to Cancún, Quintana Roo, the construction of the Catvi in Chichén Itzá is 63% complete, and in Ek’ Balam, work has progressed by 42%.

Featured Archaeological Finds
One of the most important discoveries in Palenque is a lithic production workshop, where multiple obsidian blades and flakes were found, revealing the different stages in the manufacture of tools.
In addition, in 2021, a stucco mask of the corn god was discovered in House B of El Palacio de Palenque, which represents this deity associated with life, agriculture and prosperity, one of the most important elements of Mayan cosmogony.
