More than 340 Thousand Passengers have Traveled on the Mayan Train

At President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s morning press conference, a detailed report on the Mayan Train was presented.

Óscar David Lozano Águila, general director of the project, announced that to date, 340,622 passengers have traveled on this iconic train.

Of this total, 248,700 tickets were sold at station ticket offices, while 91,922 were purchased online through the official website.

The report was released after 239 days of operations, highlighting that currently 24 stations of the Maya Train are in operation, covering sections one to five.

In addition, Lozano Águila mentioned that the railway infrastructure is complemented by two garages, five maintenance bases and two additional garages.

Main tourist destinations of the Mayan Train

The most popular stations are located in key tourist destinations, with Cancun topping the list with 86,401 passengers.

Mérida follows closely with 75,486, followed by Campeche with 34,481, Playa del Carmen with 31,896, Valladolid with 27,251, and Palenque with 18,607 passengers. These six points account for 80.4% of the total number of travelers.

In addition, the magical towns of Izamal, Chichén Itzá, and Puerto Morelos have also seen a considerable flow of tourists, exceeding 17,000, 14,000, and 6,000 passengers, respectively.

Along the route, other stations from Escárcega to Edzná have also contributed to the total passenger volume.

Operation and human resources of the Mayan Train

The Maya Train staff is made up of 890 employees, of which 284 are women and 606 are men.

In terms of operations, there are nine teams of safety inspectors, 46 drivers, 30 traffic regulators and 49 railway guards.

These professionals have received a total of 97,800 hours of training to ensure safety and efficiency in the 749,379.7 kilometers traveled by the train so far.

Currently, the Maya Train operates with 10 trains in operation and offers 12 commercial services to meet the growing demand of passengers.

In addition, the Maya Train’s tourist offer includes magical towns, beaches, archaeological sites, and a cultural and natural wealth that continues to attract thousands of visitors.

Progress in the construction of the Mayan Train hotels

Blas Andrés Núñez Jordán, head of the Maya Train Operations Coordination Center (CCO), reported on the progress in the construction of the hotels associated with the project.

The hotel in Palenque has reached 44% progress, generating more than 800 jobs, while the hotel in Edzná has 84.7% progress, employing 922 people. Each of these hotels will have 160 rooms.

On the other hand, the smallest hotel in the project is being built in Calakmul, with 144 rooms and 90% progress in its construction, where more than 1,700 people have worked.

He also highlighted the creation of the “Nuevo Uxmal” National Park and the “La Plancha” park as part of the additional benefits of the project.

Progress in the Program for the Improvement of Archaeological Zones (Promeza)

Diego Prieto Hernández, general director of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), said that in sections one to four of the Maya Train, conservation work is being carried out at 15 key archaeological sites as part of the Program for the Improvement of Archaeological Zones (Promeza).

Among the notable sites are Palenque, Edzná, Uxmal, Kabah, Dzibilchaltún and Chichén Itzá.

During construction, 19,055 buildings, 529 burials, 1,383 movable assets and 1,295 natural features have been rescued, which underlines the cultural and archaeological importance of the project.

In addition, nine Visitor Service Centers and six museums are being developed and will be inaugurated in the coming months, further enriching the cultural offering of the region.
