The long-awaited Mayan Train project launches on December 16, linking San Francisco de Campeche with Cancún, Quintana Roo.

This initial launch of passenger service marks the beginning of a new era in regional transportation.

The Mayan Train plans to expand its operations to cover sections 5, 6 and 7, with an estimated start date of February 29, 2024.

Schedules and Initial Stages: A Detailed Tour

Óscar David Lozano Águila, general director of Tren Maya S.A. de C.V., detailed that the first train will depart at 7:00 a.m., followed by a second at 11:00 a.m., a schedule that will remain until January 15, 2024.

Subsequently, a third convoy will join at 9:00 a.m. The second phase of the project, which will connect Cancún with Palenque, will begin on December 31, turning Palenque into a new strategic starting point.

Affordable Prices and Competitive Travel Times

As for fares, passengers will be able to enjoy competitive prices: 1,166 pesos for Turista class and 1,862 pesos for Premier, cheaper compared to bus and private travel options.

The estimated travel time from Campeche to Cancun is approximately five and a half hours, varying slightly depending on scheduled stops.

Complete Preparation: Trains Ready for Action

Maite Ramos Gómez, general director of Alstom México, confirmed the arrival of the sixth convoy on December 10, thus completing the initial set of trains.

On December 15, in addition to the inaugural trip of the Mayan Train led by President López Obrador, the Ie-tram will be launched in Mérida, Yucatán, a parallel public transportation initiative.

Comprehensive Infrastructure: Preparations for Loading and Maintenance

In terms of infrastructure, Lozano Águila highlighted the construction of a multimodal terminal in Chetumal Airport and an operations yard in Xpujil.

Twelve additional stations, four maintenance bases, a depot in Tulum, and a workshop at the Chetumal Airport are part of the expansion plan.

A Project of Great Magnitude: Economic and Technical Boost

The Mayan Train is a monumental work, with the installation of 1.8 million sleepers and 2.8 million cubic meters of ballast.

The construction of 14 electrical substations and the use of 123 thousand tons of rail demonstrate the magnitude of the project, which has generated 30 thousand direct jobs, in addition to the 37 thousand members of the Sedena engineering group.
