Quintana Roo is about to add a new destination to its vast tourist and cultural offering with the upcoming opening of the Ichkabal archaeological zone.

Scheduled for September, this ancient Mayan city promises to be one of the region’s biggest attractions, driven largely by its direct connection to the Mayan Train station in Bacalar.

Ichkabal, which is located about 40 kilometers west of the Bacalar lagoon and just nine kilometers northeast of Dzinbanché, is also close to the Kohunlich archaeological site.

This new archaeological site not only stands out for its rich history, but also for the important infrastructure works that are being carried out to facilitate access for visitors.

According to the governor of Quintana Roo, Mara Lezama, important work is being carried out to ensure that this jewel of the Mayan civilization is ready to receive thousands of tourists starting in September.

A Comprehensive Archaeological Recovery Project

The Archaeological Zone Improvement Program (Promeza) is playing a crucial role in the recovery and enhancement of Ichkabal.

Among the recent discoveries is a cistern used by the ancient Mayans for the storage of water and corn, which underlines the importance of this site in the pre-Hispanic history of the region.

In addition to the restoration of structures, access roads are being built that will allow visitors to arrive comfortably from the Mayan Train station in Bacalar, consolidating Ichkabal as a reference point for cultural tourism.

Governor Mara Lezama also noted that the exact date of the inauguration of Ichkabal will be determined in an upcoming meeting with the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and the director of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), Diego Prieto Hernández.

This meeting will be decisive in setting the final details of the official opening of this new archaeological zone.

Ichkabal: A Growing Cultural Destination

The importance of Ichkabal lies not only in its archaeological value, but also in its potential to attract a large number of tourists, especially those visiting the Costa Maya on cruise ships.

According to Alan Maciel, a researcher at INAH in Quintana Roo, the proximity of Ichkabal to Mahahual makes this site an ideal stop for cruise passengers currently visiting Chacchoben and Kohunlich.

The opening of Ichkabal, added to the connectivity offered by the Mayan Train, is intended to consolidate this new site as one of the most relevant cultural destinations in Quintana Roo.

This development will not only enrich the region’s tourist offering, but will also contribute to strengthening the cultural identity and preserving the historical heritage of the Mayan civilization.
