The virtual president-elect of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, has reaffirmed her commitment to continuing the country’s emblematic railway projects.

During a press conference held at her transition office in the Iztapalapa borough, Sheinbaum announced that she will continue to develop passenger trains, highlighting the expansion of the Mayan Train and the continuation of the Interoceanic Train.

Sheinbaum explained that there are still two pending interconnections for the Tren Interoceánico.

One will connect with the Dos Bocas Refinery in Paraíso, Tabasco, and the other will allow the extension of the Tren Maya to Puerto Progreso, in Yucatán.

These expansions will not only improve connectivity but also boost the economic and tourist development of the southeastern region of the country.

The upcoming leader assured that the construction scheme for both the Tren Maya and the Tren Interoceánico will remain mixed.

This means that part of the trains will be built by military engineers and the other part by private companies.

To ensure transparency and efficiency in the process, public tenders will be conducted in 2024, with the goal of starting construction in 2025.

Railway projects for national development

The Tren Maya and the Tren Interoceánico are two of the most significant projects of Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s administration.

The expansion of the Tren Maya to 3,000 kilometers is a testament to Claudia Sheinbaum’s commitment to continuing these works.

This project will not only facilitate the transportation of passengers and goods but also contribute to the sustainable development of the region.

The Tren Interoceánico, on the other hand, aims to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.

With new interconnections to the Dos Bocas Refinery and Puerto Progreso, this project is expected to become a key logistical hub for trade and industry in Mexico and Central America.

Economic and Tourism Benefits

The expansion of the Tren Maya and the continuation of the Tren Interoceánico will bring multiple economic and tourism benefits.

Greater connectivity will promote tourism in the southeastern region, allowing visitors to explore archaeological sites, beaches, and natural reserves more easily.

Additionally, these projects will create direct and indirect jobs during the construction and operation of the trains, boosting the local economy.

Furthermore, the railway infrastructure will facilitate the transportation of goods, reducing costs and transit times.

This will benefit various industries, from agriculture to manufacturing, strengthening Mexico’s competitiveness in the global market.

Commitment to the Environment

Claudia Sheinbaum also highlighted the importance of these projects in terms of environmental sustainability.

Implementing passenger and freight trains will reduce the dependence on road transportation, thus decreasing greenhouse gas emissions.

Moreover, measures have been taken to minimize the environmental impact during the construction of the tracks, protecting the ecosystems and biodiversity of the region.
