Just two days after handing over the presidential sash to Claudia Sheinbaum, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador led the official inauguration of the Maya Train at the Chetumal station.
This project has been described by the president himself as one of the greatest achievements of his government and, according to his statements, represents the most transcendental infrastructure project of recent decades in Mexico.
A project that defied criticism and obstacles
The construction of the Mayan Train has not been free of controversy.
López Obrador mentioned that, despite the difficulties they faced, especially due to the opposition of groups that he has described as “pseudo-environmentalists” and the doubts of his critics, the train was completed on time and in the correct manner.
The total cost of the work amounted to 500 billion pesos, a significant investment that the president considers necessary for the development of the southeastern region of the country.
To achieve the completion of the train, the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) turned to the engineers who had previously worked on the construction of the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), who were fundamental in the conclusion of the 1,554 kilometers that make up the Mayan Train railway route.

A legacy for future generations
During the ceremony, López Obrador described the completion of the Maya Train as a true “feat” and highlighted its relevance for Mexico and the world.
According to the president, this project will allow visitors to discover archaeological gems of the magnitude of Calakmul, comparing it to such important historical destinations as Athens or Egypt.
The train, he says, will make it easier for more people to access these sites, thus contributing to the preservation and appreciation of Mexico’s cultural and natural heritage.
A closure with a long-term vision
In his inauguration speech, López Obrador also took the opportunity to underline the importance of maintaining the principles that guide the Fourth Transformation, mentioning the need to avoid corruption and maintain austerity.
He stressed the importance of preventing the government from becoming a luxury apparatus and highlighted the importance of continuing to focus public resources on the well-being of the population.
With the inauguration of the station in Chetumal, López Obrador closes a cycle of his administration marked by large infrastructure projects, leaving as a legacy a work that promises to transform tourism and development in the southeast of Mexico.
