Mayan Train Discover Ancestral Navigation System
The work team discovered another 205 archaeological monuments in the area. Mayan Train Discover Ancestral Navigation System.
The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) has made a revolutionary discovery in Section 6 of the Mayan Train, near the community of Chumpón in Felipe Carrillo Puerto.
During excavations carried out between September 2022 and March 2023, 83 pre-Hispanic albarradas dating from the Classic Mayan period were found, suggesting that they functioned as a form of ancient navigation system, comparable to a modern GPS.
An Ancestral Navigation System
Albarradas, structures made of limestone, were discovered near bodies of water and mostly had an ‘L’-shaped arrangement.
This pattern has led archaeologists to theorize that these structures served as landmarks or markers in the landscape, helping the ancient Mayans navigate through their environment.
This discovery not only illuminates unknown aspects of Mayan engineering, but also offers new perspectives on their advanced knowledge of the territory.

Archaeological Finds at the Site
In addition to the albarradas, the team led by Fabián Gutiérrez Gómez discovered another 205 archaeological monuments in the area.
These include two terraces, two wells, and 53 foundations, which together form a complex that offers an invaluable window to the past.
These findings are testimony to the rich cultural heritage and sophistication of the pre-Hispanic civilizations that inhabited the region.
Conservation and Exhibition of Discoveries
All the artifacts and structures discovered are being carefully preserved by the Federal Ministry of Culture.
INAH plans to exhibit these pieces in museums so that the public can appreciate and learn more about the deep and rich history of Mexico.
This exhibition will not only enrich the public’s cultural knowledge but will also reaffirm the importance of the Mayans in human history.
Importance of Archaeological Research in Infrastructure Projects
This discovery underscores the critical importance of conducting detailed archaeological investigations before any infrastructure project, especially in regions with a rich historical heritage such as southeastern Mexico.
The effective collaboration between INAH and the developers of the Mayan Train has allowed a respectful integration of modernity with the preservation of cultural heritage.
Mayan Train Discover Ancestral Navigation System
The discovery of the albarradas and other monuments in Section 6 of the Mayan Train has not only revealed a hidden part of Mayan history, but has also demonstrated how modern projects can coexist with respect and celebration of ancient civilizations.
This balance between development and conservation is essential to ensure that future generations can also appreciate and learn from our shared past.
