Mexico’s current federal administration is fine-tuning the details for the launch of the initial phase of the Mayan Train, a key project on President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s agenda.
This historic event, scheduled for December 15, will mark the beginning of operations in the segment that connects Campeche with Cancun.
President López Obrador, in a recent press conference, announced that the inaugural trip, which will include round-trip routes, will be open to the public from that day on.
Strong demand for tickets is anticipated in the first days after launch, with sales beginning December 1 through the official portal.

Mexico Gets Ready to Inaugurate Initial Phase of the Mayan Train
This major infrastructure project will be deployed in several phases, with the second stage scheduled for December 31, connecting Cancún with Palenque. The entire project is expected to be operational by the end of February 2024.
The president highlighted the challenges faced during the construction of section 5 in Quintana Roo, especially in the preservation of the region’s unique natural features, such as cenotes and underground rivers.
In parallel, the Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport in Tulum, described by López Obrador as one of the most beautiful airports in the world, is preparing for its inauguration on December 1.
Several airlines, both national and international, have already shown interest in operating from this new terminal.
Before the inauguration ceremony, scheduled for 12:30 local time, the Ministry of National Defense, led by Secretary Luis Cresencio Sandoval González, will provide details about the airport in a morning press conference.
During the inaugural event, the president will deliver a commemorative speech on the fifth anniversary of the beginning of the Fourth Transformation Government, marking a significant advance in Mexico’s infrastructure and transportation history.
These efforts are part of the government’s commitment to preserve and value the cultural heritage of the region through the development of the Mayan Train.
