From the National Palace, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has confirmed that the Mayan Train project is close to completion, thus complying with the original schedule that projects its closure for August.
Progress and Scope of the Mayan Train
During his morning conference, President López Obrador highlighted that the Mayan Train currently operates from Palenque to Playa del Carmen.
However, the works continue to advance towards Calakmul and from there to Escárcega. “A problem that arose in the section from Playa del Carmen to Tulum with a bridge has already been resolved, because we are taking care not to affect underground rivers or cenotes, not to destroy the environment,” said the president.

Overcoming Technical Challenges
López Obrador reported that, after the resolution of this “technical problem”, they are on track to close the complete circuit of the Mayan Train by August.
This specific stretch presented significant environmental challenges, and the solutions implemented focused on protecting the underground formations and cenote ecosystems characteristic of the region.
Environmental Commitment and Future of the Project
The president highlighted that the Mayan Train has become the work with the largest number of wildlife crossings in the history of Mexico.
He stressed that all the wildlife crossings built in the 1,554 kilometers of the Mayan Train exceed in quantity those of any other project in the country.
These steps are essential to preserve biodiversity and allow the safe passage of animals along the rail corridor.
In addition, the president emphasized his intention not to leave the work pending for the next administration, which will be headed by Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.
This commitment underlines the importance that the current government gives to the Mayan Train as an engine of economic and tourism development for southeastern Mexico.
