Mexico’s incoming president, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, has announced an ambitious project that includes the construction of three new freight and passenger train routes, similar to the current Mayan Train.

This project, which will begin upon her assumption of office, is expected to be completed within four to five years, occupying a significant portion of her term.

From her transition house in the Iztapalapa district, Sheinbaum detailed that these new railway routes will be managed by both military engineers and private companies, aiming to enhance national connectivity.

The first of these routes will span 1,143 kilometers, benefiting residents of central, bajío, and northern Mexico by traversing eight federal entities.

During the conference, Sheinbaum mentioned that Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina, who will be her Secretary of Communications and Transportation, will provide more details in the near future.

Sheinbaum also emphasized that her administration will continue the pending projects of the Interoceanic Train, including a connection to the Dos Bocas Refinery in Tabasco and another to Puerto Progreso.

Additionally, she noted that the development of the freight train for the Tren Maya is still needed, utilizing the existing tracks independently from the newly announced routes.

The new Sheinbaum Pardo railway project seeks to continue with the Fourth Transformation initiated by the current government, reinforce and expand the railway transport network for both cargo and passengers.

New Passenger Railway Routes

The three confirmed routes are similar to the Tren Maya model promoted by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Mexico – Guadalajara Route

This route will span 581 kilometers with an investment of 55 billion pesos. Construction will begin on October 1, 2024, and is expected to be completed by May 17, 2029.

The route will include stations in Mexico City, Cuautitlán, Tula de Allende, San Juan del Río, Santiago de Querétaro, Celaya, Salamanca, Irapuato, La Piedad de Cabadas, La Ribera, Ocotlán, Poncitlán, and Guadalajara.

AIFA – Pachuca Route

This route, spanning 150 kilometers, will have an investment of 20 billion pesos. The project will begin on October 1, 2024, and will be completed by August 17, 2029.

This route will provide a direct connection between the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) and Pachuca, with intermediate stations in Huitzila, Téllez, and Pachuca, facilitating mobility for residents of Hidalgo and passengers heading to the new airport.

CDMX – Nuevo Laredo Route

The longest route, covering 1,143 kilometers with an investment of 400 billion pesos, will begin construction on October 1, 2024, and will conclude by December 13, 2029.

This route will connect Mexico City with Nuevo Laredo in Tamaulipas, passing through San Luis Potosí and Monterrey.

It will benefit regions such as Anáhuac, Bustamante, General Escobedo, Lampazos de Naranjo, Nuevo Laredo, Salinas Victoria, San Nicolas de los Garza, and Villaldama.

The next government intends to hold tenders before taking office, allowing works to begin at the same time as its administration.

Sheinbaum also mentioned that the expansion of the Suburban Train, which reaches the Buenavista station, will be inaugurated by President López Obrador, while she will be in charge of extending mobility with the route to Pachuca.
