Mayan Train Could Connect with the United States and Canada
Experts assured in an interview that the Mayan Train could connect with the United States and Canada and bring multiple benefits for the three nations.
The Mexican firm Pacific Canadian Kansas City (CPKC) has announced its intention to collaborate with the Trans-Isthmic Corridor and the Mayan Train to provide rail links to North America.
Óscar del Cueto, president of CPKC in Mexico, affirmed that the recent merger of Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern will allow “fluid” connections between the ports of Mexico, those of the eastern United States and all of Canada, thus strengthening trade between these nations.
In an interview with “En los Tiempos de la Radio”, Del Cueto explained that this new form of transportation will be similar to direct air routes with stopovers. In the second case, the time spent exchanging cargo between wagons causes shipment delays.
Instead, with the current integration, the cargo will reach its final destination in a single trip, either in Canada or in the eastern United States, thus optimizing delivery times and efficiency in freight transportation.

This new collaboration approach between the Mayan Train and the Trans-Isthmic Corridor, two key initiatives of the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, represents a unique opportunity to establish strategic alliances that allow connecting with freight trains nationwide and boosting economic growth in the region.
The Trans-Isthmic Corridor, according to Del Cueto, will increase the number of vessels arriving in the southeast of the country, which in turn will promote the development of new industrial parks and attract investment in the industrial sector, generating employment and improving the quality of life of the inhabitants of the area.
In March of this year, President López Obrador confirmed that the Interoceanic Corridor would be linked to the Mayan Train, with the purpose of expanding the railway network in the south and southeast of Mexico and facilitating the transport of goods and people in the region.
The Secretary of National Defense (Sedena) also announced that an interchange terminal between the two trains is being built in Palenque, Chiapas, which will allow greater fluidity in the transit of goods between the Trans-Isthmic Corridor and the Mayan Train.

This proposal for rail integration between Mexico, the United States, and Canada is part of a context of growing commercial collaboration between these countries, reinforced by the entry into force of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States, and Canada (T-MEC) in July 2020.
This commercial alliance, which replaces the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), seeks to boost economic growth, protect the rights of workers and promote fairer and more equitable trade between the nations involved.
The railway connection proposed by CPKC is presented as a key tool to enhance the region’s competitiveness, by allowing greater efficiency in the transport of goods, reducing transit times and lowering logistics costs.
In addition, this project could attract more investors interested in establishing operations in Mexico, which would contribute to the strengthening of the local economy and the development of state-of-the-art infrastructure in the country.
The collaboration between the Mayan Train and the Trans-Isthmic Corridor will also promote tourism in the region, as it will facilitate access to emblematic tourist destinations in the south and southeast of Mexico, such as Palenque, Mérida and Cancún.

This increased influx of tourists could generate employment and increase income for local communities, while promoting the conservation of the cultural and natural heritage of the area.
CPKC’s proposal joins a series of infrastructure projects in North America that seek to improve connectivity and integration between Mexico, the United States and Canada.
Among these are the modernization of the highway network, the development of port and airport infrastructures, and the creation of clean energy corridors to promote the transition towards renewable energy sources.
The CPKC initiative to unite the Mayan Train and the Trans-Isthmic Corridor with the United States and Canada represents a great opportunity to strengthen economic, commercial, and tourism cooperation between these countries.
By improving the efficiency of freight transportation and facilitating access to key tourist destinations, this project will contribute to economic growth, sustainable development, and the well-being of the region’s communities.
