The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has confirmed that the inauguration date of the Mayan Train is set in stone and that the project will start operating in December 2023.
During a meeting with public and private builders in Mérida, Yucatán, the president reported that 600 kilometers of dirt roads have been completed and that rails and the electrical system are currently being installed and work is being done on the assembly of stations and complementary works.
López Obrador also published a photo from an overflight in Tulum, Quintana Roo, where he shared some beautiful lagoons and highlighted that the Mayan Train is “like a dream that will soon come true very soon.”
During his tour of the Yucatan peninsula, the president met with the governor of Yucatan, Mauricio Vila, to discuss projects such as the Mayan Train, the Great Park of La Plancha and the expansion of the Port of Altura Progreso, among other works that seek strengthen tourism and the economy of the area.
However, the president’s visit coincided with a protest organized by environmental groups, academics, and residents of Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Puerto Morelos, who oppose Section 5 of the Mayan Train due to the environmental damage caused by the work, or the less is what they argue.
