The Mayan Train, one of the flagship projects of the current Mexican government, has begun operating with its first trip on the P’atal train, a model designed especially for long, overnight journeys.
This Friday, the Cancún station witnessed its first trip to the Chichén Itzá terminal, with distinguished passengers on board, such as President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, his successor.
This inaugural trip also included the presence of governors allied with the Fourth Transformation movement.
During the approximately two-hour trip, passengers were able to experience the comforts of the P’atal Train, which includes cabins that transform into beds, allowing travelers to rest as they advance toward their destination.
Later, the authorities toured the archaeological zone of Chichén Itzá and were part of the inauguration of one of the Mayan Train hotels, located near the site, which is under the administration of the National Defense Secretariat.
Features of the P’atal Train
The P’atal Train, whose name in the Mayan language means “to stay,” was specifically designed for long journeys, and is made up of seven carriages that include sleeping areas.
Inside, it has eight cabins equipped with bathrooms and showers, some of them private, as well as 16 bunk beds so that passengers can sleep comfortably during the journey.
This train offers a level of accessibility for people with reduced mobility, with adapted bedrooms and additional services.
In addition, it is equipped with a cafeteria, reclining seats, space for bicycles and strollers, electrical connection, WiFi and an air purification system.

Arriving to Merida
After completing the visit to the archaeological site of Chichén Itzá, President López Obrador and his entourage boarded the P’atal Train again to head to the Teya station, located in the city of Mérida.
The arrival at this station took place during the night, fulfilling the promise of offering a high-quality night service.
Innovation and technology in every train car
The P’atal Train is part of a larger plan that includes the manufacture of 42 railway cars in collaboration with Canadian and French companies.
It also stands out for its design inspired by Mayan culture, specifically the starry skies that the ancient Mayans used to observe and study.
This railway project is a symbol of the government’s commitment to the development of southeastern Mexico, integrating technology, comfort and accessibility into a single travel experience.
